The case of Portland's disappearing ghost bikes »

I’ve noticed that a few ghost bikes around Portland have vanished this year. 

Actually, I should say my 11-year-old daughter has noticed. She’s fascinated by the street-roots movement to mark the locations where bicycle riders have died. She always alerts me from the backseat when she notices one of the memorials is missing from its usual spot.

At any rate, I assumed they ghost-white bikes were being removed by nearby property owners who deem them unsuitable for public walkways.

But after reading Thursday’s Bike Portland post about how a ghost bike wound up in the TriMet lost and found, I have to wonder if they have been targeted by bored and ignorant thieves.
